Understanding How Long It Takes to Build an Inground Pool

Are you ready for the exciting part when you get to have a stunning pool in your home? While looking forward to it, you can’t help but wonder how long it takes to install an inground pool. While construction on a typical LCS pool takes about 6–8 weeks once permits are approved, several factors can affect that timeline, so here’s what you need to know.

Pool Designing and Initial Construction (About 1 Week)

The first step is the design process. You will meet with the designers and then explain your vision and requirements. This is the perfect time for the experts to suggest the features, materials, and types of designs. In about one week, you will have collaborated with them to come up with a picture and design of the perfect pool.

Acquiring the Permit (2–3 Weeks)

Another factor that can affect how long it takes to build an inground pool is the permit process. After coming up with the design, you must also receive the go-ahead from your local authorities. For LCS projects, permits and approvals typically take 2–3 weeks.

Preparation of the Site (2–3 Days)

Once the permit is ready, the exciting part starts, which is the ground-breaking process. Depending on the nature of the ground, the size of the pool, how accessible the site is, and other factors, layout and excavation on a typical LCS pool take 2–3 days.

Pool Construction (About 3–4 Weeks)

One important factor that affects how long it takes to get an inground pool installed is the type of pool you have chosen. Vinyl-liner pools are generally quicker to build, while concrete (gunite) pools are more detailed. On a typical LCS gunite pool, steel and plumbing take 3–4 days, spraying the gunite shell takes 1 day, tile and coping take about 7 days, and decking and electrical take 10–14 days. From excavation to startup, construction on a typical LCS gunite pool takes 6–8 weeks once permits are approved.

Plaster, Startup and Finishing (About 4 Weeks)

This is the last stage of the entire process, where the pool is plastered and started up, and the experts put the finishing touches based on your requirements. Maybe for aesthetics, you wanted cool pool features like lighting and waterfalls. On a typical LCS pool, plaster and startup together take about 28 days. Timelines vary with permitting, weather, and design scope.
